Geologist at the Austrian Service for Torrent and Avalanche Control (WLV)

Daniela Anna Engl works for the Austrian Torrent and Avalanche Control Service (Wildbach- und Lawinenverbauung, WLV). As a practitioner at WLV, she is concerned with hydrogeological questions, landslide mitigation, and rockfall protection. She is engaged in hazard zone planning, risk analysis, and designing natural hazard protection measures. Her affinity for optimized design and sustainable solutions motivates Daniela to be an active member of the Austrian Standard for Technical Rockfall Protection working group. By teaching a regular course on rock mechanics at Innsbruck University, she stays closely connected to the academic world and the state of the art in her field.

Daniela is a geologist and is interested in nearly every movement on and beneath the ground. For her, geology is detective work. It requires attention to detail and an almost criminological instinct, coupled with experience and the ability to synthesize information.

Daniela likes to solve challenging questions. She is the developer of the mathematical model CrEAM (Creep Equilibrium Analysis Method), designed for analysing and predicting landslide behaviour. Applying math to geological questions is one of her interests; observing and measuring geological processes is another. Daniela thus brings a strong background in surveying and monitoring. She holds the Italian state exam for geometers.

Daniela joined we4DRR after the network’s foundation in 2016 and has been a member of the Steering Committee since 2025. She enjoys connecting with other female professionals working in the same or related fields. She likes sharing knowledge and experiences, and moving forward together.
