Roxana Ciurean
Geohazards Scientist at British Geological Survey
Roxana is a Geohazards Scientist at the British Geological Survey (UK), specialising in disaster risk reduction (DRR) research, with a focus on advancing science from single hazard to systemic, multi-hazard risk assessment. Her work integrates qualitative and quantitative, interdisciplinary, and participatory-based approaches to better inform decision-making across scales. Roxana leads and contributes to projects that develop knowledge, models, and products designed to strengthen risk-informed policy and practice both in the UK and internationally.
Roxana holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Vienna, focusing on vulnerability and loss assessment of buildings to hydro-meteorological hazards. Her academic background also includes Environmental Geology and Geohazards (University of Oslo, University of Bucharest). Roxana is committed to bridging science, policy, and practice and has recently deepened her skills in futures thinking and policy engagement to strengthen her DRR foundation.
Roxana’s work is driven by a vision of more resilient and equitable societies, underpinned by inclusive, transdisciplinary science and strong stakeholder collaboration. She believes this is key to transforming how we conceptualise, model, and govern interconnected, complex risks.
Roxana joined we4DRR in 2016, while she was in the final phase of her PhD studies. This opportunity allowed her to stay connected with a vibrant and growing network of professionals committed to enhancing the visibility and role of women in DRR. As a recent member of the Organisation Team, Roxana contributes to the network’s mission through strategic planning, facilitating member engagement, and helping to shape inclusive and meaningful activities that reflect the diverse expertise within the network.
